‘It’s the smell of BBQ and America’: Chamber hosts 2nd annual ‘BBQ in the Pines’


CHIPLEY – The smell of barbecue was in the air on Saturday when the Washington County Chamber of Commerce held its second annual BBQ in the Pines. The cook-off competition saw nine teams vie for the winning trophy and bragging rights as the top pit masters in Washington County. 

Along with the competitors were vendors plying their wares and local musicians entertaining the crowds while the children enjoyed the kids play area. 

Judges for the competition were State Representative Brad Drake, Congressman Neal Dunn and Richard Williams of Richard Williams Financial Services. Each team was judged in three categories, Boston butts, chicken and ribs, trophies were awarded for each category and one over all Grand Champion. 

Winners are as follows: Boston butts- Bouy #5 Sportsmans Club took first place, Heaven Scent BBQ placed second and CrombieÂ’s Smoke Crew placed third. Chicken- CrombieÂ’s Smoke Crew took first place, Big JimÂ’s Smokin Butts placed second and Heaven Scent BBQ placed thrid. Ribs ? Big JimÂ’s Smokin Butts took first place, Heaven Scent BBQ placed second and Northwest Title Group placed third. The overall Grand Champion was Big JimÂ’s Smokin Butts.  

“It smells like America here today,” said Congressman Neal Dunn. “There is nothing in the world like BBQ, and I am honored to be here eating some of Washington CountyÂ’s finest.” 

State Representative Brad Drake says the day was an example of “living like Americans  should”.

“We are going to live like American people should live, not in fear but in appreciation for what has been given to us by the patriots before us,” said Drake. “God bless good food and friends and God bless America.”
