Two vie for Vernon mayoral seat
The mayoral seat will be the only contested race when Vernon holds it municipal election Tuesday, April 19. Former Vernon city councilman Gary Owens and Marlene Hintz each qualified for the position, which was vacated in 2021 by Candice Hodges. Two other council seats will each be filled with no opposition by incumbent Joey Brock and Mary Porteus.
Vernon City Council discussed its open city clerk and deputy city clerk positions when the council met in a workshop April 4. Interim City Clerk Karen White advised the council that seven applications were received for the positions. Council members will select four candidates to interview in a special meeting which will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 14.
