UPDATE: Alabama inmate taken into custody near Bethlehem community

Deputies with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search and subsequent capture of a Covington County, Alabama inmate who escaped Sunday from a work release detail near Highway 2, west of Esto.

41-year-old John Hunter Wood left on a four-wheeler, which was been recovered under a wooden bridge off Roping Road area. Wood, who was arrested April 7 in Covington County on a charge of carjacking with no physical injury, was captured after he returned to the Roping Road area. He was taken into custody without further incident and taken to the Holmes County Jail.

K-9 tracking teams from both Holmes and Walton Correctional Institutions assisted in the search.
