‘Break the bias’

Scores of local women and other volunteers came together for the Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity “Women Build” project Friday, June 10.

The event serves as part of a national initiative that empowers women to help families build strength, stability, and independence, this program spotlights the homeownership challenges faced by women and addresses its issues by bringing women together and igniting our collective power. 

This year’s build was held at the home of Pamela Meredith in the 700 Block of East Boulevard in Chipley. Like many in Northwest Florida, Meredith’s home suffered major damage during Hurricane Michael.

Chipola Area Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Carmen Smith states the theme of this year’s Women Build event is “break the bias.” Smith says the annual project is not only the perfect time for women to learn more about construction skills, but to also lead in their community.

“Women Build is a haven for women to learn, practice and excel, no matter what their skill levels,” said Smith. “It provides an opportunity for women, who are often the backbone that supports strong communities, to unite and leverage their influence, expertise, advocacy, and social networking.”
