Family seeks answers in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run

The loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult things a family can experience, but imagine not knowing what happened to bring the loss about.

The family of William “Mike” Kirkland, 65, is seeking answers to what happened on Sunday, Nov. 6, that led to the hit-and-run incident that left the patriarch of their family dead on Holmes Valley Road.

Florida Highway Patrol said in a press release that Kirkland was walking in an easterly direction in an unlit area of Holmes Valley Road in what appeared to be in the middle of the roadway while wearing dark clothing shortly before 10 p.m.

The front of an unknown vehicle traveling east on Holmes Valley Road just after the intersection of Twin Pond Road collided with the pedestrian and drove away from the scene, leaving the victim in the roadway.

KirklandÂ’s family is asking anyone with information to please come forward.

KirklandÂ’s son-in-law, Levi Wilson, said the family just wants answers.

“We believe this was an accident,” Wilson said. “We understand that accidents happen, and that whoever did it was probably scared. Our family needs closure. We aren’t looking to put someone away for the rest of their lives. We just want to know why they left and didn’t call for help; what happened?”

Kirkland, an avid fisherman, celebrated 45 years of marriage to his wife, Dawn, just two days before he was killed. Wilson said Kirkland was already making plans for their 50th.

“He said he wanted him and Dawn to renew their vows. He wanted to marry her all over again, if she would have him,” Wilson said.

Kirkland and his wife had two daughters and five grandchildren and were a close-knit family. Wilson said the family knows that Kirkland was at peace.

“He had gone to church that day and saw his loved ones, and before he left he was able to tell everyone he loved them,” he said. “That night he told Dawn he was going to go for a walk outside to clear his head like he did many times before. He had a great day and was at peace at the end.”

Wilson says Kirkland will be remembered as a great father, husband and friend.

The Kirkland family and the authorities are asking for the publicÂ’s assistance in identifying the driver and the vehicle in this case. Call *FHP (*347) or Crime Stoppers with any information.
