Holmes and Washington schools honor veterans

Students at Holmes and Washington County schools celebrated the men and women who have served their country in honor of Veterans Day.

Thursday morning, first graders at Vernon Elementary School performed the annual singing tribute to our nationÂ’s veterans. Later in the day Florida Panhandle Technical College hosted a luncheon to recognize local veterans.

Friday morning began with a breakfast at Chipley High School followed by veterans in attendance escorted by Roulhac Middle School and CHS JROTC cadets on a Galley Walk through the CHS halls.

A tribute to veterans was given at RMS in the courtyard where they watched a video message of Kate M. Smith students also paying tribute through song. Later in the morning, a Veterans Day program was hosted at Vernon Middle and High Schools.

Over in Holmes County, the JROTC cadets at Holmes County High School held a celebration with special speaker retired Brig. Gen. Mike Canzoneri.

CHS Principal Alicia Clemmons thanked students and veterans alike for participating Friday.

“Thank you to the wonderful veterans who celebrated Veterans Day with us at Chipley High School,” she said. “We appreciate all you have done so that we can come to this school each day freely and we can have the freedoms we all love and appreciate. I would also like to give special thanks to Beta Club, Student Council, and Kate M. Smith Chorus for their hard work preparing for today.”
