Two correctional officers from Northwest Florida Reception Center in Chipley were arrested Monday, August 17, in connection with a series of thefts at Walmart locations in Bay County.

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Walmart in Callaway regarding a reported theft. Witnesses said the suspects fled in a white Hyundai Sonata. Deputies began searching the area and used FLOCK license‑plate reader technology to help locate the vehicle.

While investigating the Callaway incident, a deputy spotted the vehicle traveling north on Highway 77 near Highway 388 and conducted a traffic stop. The occupants were identified as Kaitlyn Thomas, 32, and Shaun Smith, 20. Surveillance footage confirmed their involvement, and both were taken into custody.

It was then discovered that Thomas and Smith are correctional officers employed at Northwest Florida Reception Center in Chipley.

Deputies say the pair allegedly used reusable Walmart bags to conceal items including Magic: The Gathering trading cards, a massage gun, a pocket vacuum, and a LEGO set. Thomas was reportedly seen leaving the store without paying and placing the items in the trunk of the Hyundai before driving away.

During questioning, Thomas allegedly admitted to visiting Walmart locations in Callaway, Panama City, and Lynn Haven over the past three weeks to steal Magic: The Gathering cards and LEGO sets.

A search warrant executed on the vehicle uncovered more than $3,000 in stolen merchandise, including a large quantity of trading cards. Investigators say the number of cards found exceeded those identified in the Callaway theft.

The case has been turned over to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, which is reviewing evidence to determine whether additional thefts are connected to the suspects.

Thomas and Smith are charged with multiple counts of grand theft. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
