A Caryville man was arrested on multiple drug-related and other charges following a traffic stop Sunday, August 31, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop on Yates Settlement Road after attempting to stop a vehicle driven by 37-year-old Jeremy Ryan Hewett of Caryville, the sheriff’s office reported.
According to WCSO, the vehicle continued traveling westbound after deputies activated their emergency lights and did not immediately stop. Deputies reported seeing the driver extend an arm from the driver’s side window and drop what appeared to be a plastic bag from the vehicle.
The vehicle later turned onto Perry Place before coming to a stop.
WCSO said Hewett exited the vehicle and was detained by deputies because of his actions before the stop. While deputies were escorting him to a patrol vehicle, Hewett allegedly yelled, pulled away from deputies, extended his feet in front of him and pushed backward.
Authorities said Hewett later calmed down and cooperated with deputies.
During the subsequent investigation, Hewett allegedly told deputies he had been in possession of methamphetamine and had discarded it from the vehicle, according to WCSO. Deputies also reported finding drug paraphernalia during a search.
Hewett was arrested and transported to the Washington County Jail. He was booked on charges of resisting an officer without violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, destroying evidence and possession of methamphetamine.
The charges are accusations, and Hewett is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
