The Wausau City Council adopted an ordinance on Thursday, Sept. 21, closing the final budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. 

Throughout the month of September, the council held public hearings regarding the proposed budget where residents could talk about and view the tentative budget amount.

“Final numbers had not changed since they had been published in the newspaper,†Town Clerk Margaret Riley said. 

The final 2023-2024 balanced budget number is $3,231,482.

In other Wausau news, Mayor Roger Dale Hagan announced that Denise Spencer will be taking over as town clerk on Oct. 1. Margaret Riley will retire on Sept. 30 and hand over her duties after 27 years of service to the city.

Animal control and animal registration once again came before the council and will be brought back up at the October meeting. The city is exploring ways to cut costs and ensure the city still has animal control.

The council will be attending the Legislative Delegation meeting in Chipley on Oct. 3 at the Washington County Annex. The town will present a grant request to finish the Possum Palace.
