The Vernon City Council joined the ongoing discussion involving data center development during its Monday, July 20 meeting, approving steps toward a one year moratorium and discussing upcoming community initiatives, including a second pet registration and low cost vaccination event.
City officials discussed concerns about moving ahead with a permanent data center ban because of possible legal challenges involving property rights. The city attorney recommended a temporary moratorium instead, allowing time to review future state action and regulatory changes. The council approved directing the city attorney to draft a resolution creating the one-year moratorium.
The council also discussed plans for another low cost animal vaccination and registration event. A veterinarian has agreed to return later this August or September to provide $10 rabies vaccinations, free pet registrations, and additional reduced cost vaccines. Officials said the previous event helped register 10 additional pets and discussed expanding outreach to include more residents, while considering whether participation could extend beyond city limits. The Vernon City Council will meet again to discuss business in a workshop on Monday, August 3, at 5:30 p.m.
