Washington County firefighters will showcase their skills and teamwork during the third annual Washington County Fire Games III on Saturday, September 5, at the Possum Palace in Wausau. Introduced by Greenhead District Chief Greg Cole in 2024, the event highlights the talent and dedication of local firefighters through friendly competition while strengthening community ties.

Held the first Saturday of September, the games also serve as a tribute to the lives lost on 9/11. This year’s event will spotlight actor and former New York City firefighter Steve Buscemi, who returned to his firehouse to assist in recovery efforts following the attacks. Organizers say they plan to honor a different firefighter each year who contributed to the 9/11 response going forward.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. this year to help beat the heat, with vendors and teams arriving earlier to set up. All competition events will take place on the adjacent baseball field, and admission and parking remain free.

The games will feature four events with two firefighters per team: the PPE/SCBA Relay, Make‑a‑Line, Bucket Brigade, and Water Polo. Each challenge tests speed, precision, and teamwork, with trophies awarded to the top three overall teams and first‑place winners in each event. Judges this year include county commissioners and local candidates.

The event will also feature food and refreshments. Washington County Fire Department Station 1 in Wausau will sell barbecue plates, and Lifted and Loaded, a new Panama City business specializing in teas, dirty sodas, and energy drinks, will operate a vendor booth and donate a portion of proceeds back to the Fire Games.

This year’s planning team includes Brad Collins and Melissa Collins of Orange Hill Fire Department, who are coordinating sponsors, T‑shirts, and team registration. Those interested in sponsorship opportunities or who have registration questions can contact Chief Cole at 850-849-1121 or via email greenheadfiredepartment@gmail.com. Teams can also be registered online through this link, and the registration deadline is Friday, August 21.
