The Vernon City Council met for regular business on Monday, August 17, and addressed fire department coordination, water system concerns, the new tennis courts, and city projects.
Mayor Angel LeCompte reported receiving continued concerns involving the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department and Washington County officials over response protocols and territorial control. Council members expressed a desire to address outstanding issues from previous meetings and emphasized the importance of clear accountability along with council involvement. A meeting with city and county representatives was scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, with an update to be provided at the next Vernon City Council meeting.
The council also discussed operations at the newly completed tennis courts. Four courts will be used by the school and two by the city. The public will have access once security measures are installed and the council establishes hours and procedures. Tennis programs, pickleball events, and future facility improvements also were discussed.
The council approved a change order for the Well 1 and Well 2 revitalization project after Well 2 was deemed beyond repair. The project’s focus on Well 1 includes a new submersible pump and motor. The revised contract results in a net decrease of $813.59 and is intended to meet a September 15 deadline. Construction also began on the community center.
The council approved the Vernon High School Homecoming Parade for September 18 at 1 p.m. It also conducted the first reading of an ordinance establishing a temporary one year moratorium on development approvals involving data centers and high density computing facilities while land development regulations are studied.
The Vernon City Council will meet for a regular workshop on Tuesday, September 8, at 5:30 p.m., at Vernon City Hall.
