Commissioner Steve Joyner passes at 66

Longtime Washington County Commissioner Allen Steve Joyner passed away Sunday at his home at the age of 66.

Joyner served Washington County as both County Administrator from 2011 to 2013 and District 5 County Commissioner from 2016 to 2022.

Washington County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Tray Hawkins says it was rare to work with someone like Joyner. 

“Very seldom in life do you have the opportunity to work with someone you love, respect and cherish their leadership as I did Steve Joyner,” said Hawkins. “He was steadfast in his leadership.  He was always there as a sounding board and advocate for the community.”

Joyner was a businessman having owned and operated numerous businesses through the years such as J&J Servicing Center and Beall Tire and the Auto Clinic. When he wasn’t working, Joyner enjoyed fishing and shooting. Commissioner Charles Kent called him a “great friend.” 

“Steve was a great guy that worked hard, even outside of being a commissioner,” said Kent. “He was also a great friend, and I will miss him terribly.”

Joyner is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Marcey and grandson Ashton.

Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to appoint someone to serve in the role of District 5 Commissioner for Joyner’s unexpired term. 

Hawkins says the role will be difficult to fill. 

“He leaves a hole in this board that can never be filled; we will try to bridge the gap, but we will never fill his shoes.”
