Vernon hoping to receive Community Center upgrades

The City of Vernon is seeking a Community Development Block Grant-Coronavirus (CDBG-CV) to fund revitalization efforts at the Vernon Community Center.

The grant application includes a proposal for electrical and plumbing upgrades, roof replacement, a fire suppression system, measures to make the facility ADA compliant, rehabilitation of the existing kitchen facilities, and the creation of a space for onsite COVID-19 testing and vaccination services. The services would be provided through partnerships with local healthcare providers. Those partnerships are not yet in place but are expected to move forward with the approval of the grant. The rehabilitated kitchen is anticipated to be used for preparing meals for homebound persons who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The requested grant amount is $987,566 with final application to be filed with the state by November 1.

A public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 26, to gain public input on the grant.
