‘Melons and Music are comin’ in hot”

The 66th Annual Panhandle Watermelon will be held Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25 at Jim Trawick Park and the Washington County Agriculture Center.

This year’s Friday night concert event will feature country music artists Josh Turner and Shenandoah with festival style seating. The free family event will also feature activities for the kids starting at 5 p.m. and the concert starting at 6 p.m.

Festival Chairman Judge Colby Peel says that while everything seems to cost more in today’s world, the event is still free.

“We are beyond excited about the music lineup and events we have planned again this yea,” said Peel. “Even with rising costs we are still able to hold this free event for the community. Our community has embraced this event for more than sixty years, and this festival’s success can be attributed to the sponsors, volunteers, participants, and everyone who attends.”

Peel went on to say the “happy faces and family togetherness” make the job worth doing.

“Seeing families come out and watch quality entertainment and enjoy numerous activities at no cost, makes everything we do worthwhile.”

The event continues Saturday, June 25, with a pancake breakfast, the 5K Hot Trot, Watermelon Parade, a classic car show, big watermelon auction, arts, crafts and food vendors.  Additionally, the ag center will have gospel music by The Thompsons at 11 a.m. and feature country music artist Billy Dean at 1:30 p.m.
