WCSO warns against phone scam

WASHINGTON COUNTY – Phone scams have become a major nuisance as well as a threat to financial security for those that are on the receiving end of those calls.

Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews is warning residents of a new scam by
people who are posing as deputies from the Washington County SheriffÂ’s
Office. The phone number is often “spoofed” and appears on caller ID as
one of
the agencies phone numbers.

Crews says some sill stop at nothing to achieve their goal.

“Scammers
will go to great lengths to get what they want,” said Crews. “It is
important to remain alert and to warn other family members who may be
vulnerable to these calls.”

The caller will claim someone has a warrant and/or fees that need to be paid. WCSO Deputies will not contact anyone over the phone for such issues.

During these calls, threats of prosecution or arrest are sometimes made if the caller doesnÂ’t receive the payment or information they requested.

Should you receive a call similar to this, disregard what is said and disconnect from the call, stated Crews.

“If you are contacted by a caller who threatens you with any type of legal action or arrest so they can obtain information, be advised that this call is fraudulent,” said Crews. “Do not give anyone your social security number or banking information. Hang up the phone immediately.”

If you are contacted by a person claiming to be an employee of Washington County SheriffÂ’s Office, it is always safest to hang up and call the office directly at 850-638-6111 to verify the information.
