Currently, visitors to Vernon Town Square by City Hall and the library don’t have a gazebo to rest under when it gets sunny.
That will soon change.
A new gazebo is being built for the area. Members of the Vernon Garden Club, who are lending support for the project, gathered at Town Square on Feb. 23 to celebrate the coming leisure structure.
Vernon native Chris Owens is building the gazebo and said he will get started on it soon. It is expected to be finished shortly after he starts and ready for the public this year.
The gazebo is being built in memory of Mary Nell Register, who worked as a teacher aide at Vernon Elementary School. Her son, Scott Register of Surplus & Salvage, is donating the materials and asked the gazebo be in her memory.
Garden Club members are also facilitating the construction of the gazebo since the Town Square is intended for community use and enjoyment.

It was really surprising to see the Family Dollar / Dollar Tree where our old home used to be ,,, appears Vernon is in an upswing to rejuvenate after the destruction of so much history in the name of “progress” ,,, thanks to (VHS ’65 Classmate) , Rhonda Dickinson , for letting us know about the Dedication Ceremony on the 23rd of February ,,, was great to see some others attending who haven’t been seen since school days …
