CHIPLEY – A Washington County staple will soon return to downtown Chipley ahead of the Chipley Garden Club’s annual fall celebration.
The scarecrows will start showing up in downtown over the next few weeks in anticipation of September’s Scarecrow Building Contest. Presently, “Homecoming at the Museum & Scarecrow Building Contest” is scheduled for Saturday, September 18, at the Washington County Historical Society in downtown Chipley.
The Chipley Garden Club’s collection of more than 30 scarecrows has been “in quarantine” for almost a year, according to members.
During July and August, club members sprayed the scarecrows down, fluffed them up, gave them some new outfits, and replaced a few broken “body parts.” Now, the club states the scarecrows are ready to burst out of their confinement.
The Garden Club says to keep an eye out downtown for the scarecrow visitors and invite the community to add its own creations to the downtown display.
