Washington County has settled a lawsuit filed by a former employee who alleged she was discriminated against for her gender and pregnancy.
Commissioners voted to accept the $55,625 settlement agreement when the Board of County Commissioners met Wednesday.
Former administrative assistant Jessica Hawkins filed the complaint last May in Washington County civil court, stating she was “continually and frequently harassed” for taking time off to attend doctor’s appointments and “frequently yelled at.” The complaint further alleged other employees who were not pregnant were given raises and/or paid at a higher rate for less work and that positions were created and filled without being advertised or affording her an opportunity to apply.
In addition to the settlement funds, Hawkins will also receive $4,421.21 in a stipulation that required the county to provide what they would expend for a month of administrative leave with benefits.
BOCC Chairman Tray Hawkins abstained from the vote due to his relationship with Jessica Hawkins, who is his sister.
