The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is embarking on a project development and environment (PD&E) study to explore the reconstruction of State Road 20 from State Road 79 to U.S. 231, spanning Washington and Bay counties.
The initiative aims to address multiple concerns, including enhancing safety, expanding roadway capacity, and resolving persistent flooding issues. The proposed improvements involve widening the current two-lane roadway to four lanes and elevating segments prone to flooding, intended to provide a safer and more reliable transportation route for motorists.
The study will develop and evaluate a range of viable alternatives, ultimately recommending the solutions deemed the most effective to meet both current and future transportation needs along the 27.2-mile corridor.
The study process includes an analysis of the social, natural, and physical environments impacted by the project. The approach is intended to minimize negative environmental impacts.
Public engagement is welcome and required by the National Environmental Policy Act.
“FDOT is committed to involving the community by sharing information and soliciting feedback throughout the study,” the agency said. “This collaborative effort ensures transparency and fosters community support for the proposed improvements. The study is expected to conclude later this year, paving the way for the implementation of essential upgrades that will significantly benefit residents and commuters in the region.”
