A Chipley man is behind bars after attempting to discard drugs in front of a Chipley Police Officer.
On Jan. 15, a CPD officer observed one Nichols G. Copeland, 27, of Chipley, at a local store. The officer believed there was an active warrant for Copeland which was confirmed by Washington County Dispatch.
The officer made contact with Copeland and attempted to conduct an arrest. Advising Copeland to remove his hands from his pockets because he was “fumbling around” in them. The officer then removed his clenched hand from his pocket in order to place his hands behind his back.
A release from CPD states it was then that Copeland backed up to a trash can and was visibly moving his hands behind his back. Once Copeland was placed in restraints, the officer found a plastic baggie tied in a knot with a crystal-like substance inside sitting on top of the trash in the can.
The evidence was collected, and Copeland was arrested and charged with the VOP warrant and possession of methamphetamine.
