Vernon attorney honors late Councilwoman Laura Brewer

Vernon City Attorney Michelle Jordan paid tribute to the late Councilwoman Laura Brewer when council members met in a Feb. 7 workshop.

Through tears, Jordan spoke of the impact Brewer had on her and the community.

“Ms. Laura was a very special person to me,” said Jordan. “She was always positive and always had something good to say, no matter what was going on in her life. She meant a lot to me and a lot to this city. I know the recreation department was very near and dear to her, so I would like to give my retainer for the month of January back to the rec department as a way to honor her memory.”

Brewer passed away in January after a battle with cancer.

Moving forward with council business, a discussion concerning how American Rescue Plan Act funds should be used prompted the council to set a special meeting to further discuss and vote on the issue. The meeting is set for February 17 at 5:30 p.m. Council also tabled discussion to purchase 10 radios for the fire department until after that special meeting in an effort to determine if the estimated $13,000 cost for the radios can be paid through ARPA funds.

Vernon City Council will meet again in regular session at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22.
