A 24-year-old Dothan, Alabama, man has been arrested following an investigation into allegations of sexual assault involving a minor under the age of 18, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

The investigation began after a report was filed alleging that Alexander John Mauldin traveled to Washington County to meet a minor and engage in sexual activity. According to the victim’s statements, Mauldin initially contacted her through the social media platform Snapchat by sending a friend request. After the connection was established, Mauldin reportedly made arrangements to travel to Washington County to meet the minor.

The victim further disclosed that the sexual encounters occurred on three separate occasions and stated that she and Mauldin had previously discussed their respective ages.

Upon receiving the report, WCSO investigators reviewed the evidence and subsequently obtained a warrant for Mauldin’s arrest.

Mauldin was taken into custody in Dothan, Alabama, on Friday, January 24, and was extradited to Washington County, Florida. He is currently being held on charges of sexual assault of a minor and obscene communication, specifically traveling to meet a minor after using a computer to facilitate communication.

Sheriff Kevin Crews emphasized the importance of parental oversight regarding minors’ social media activity. “I cannot stress enough the importance of parents monitoring their child’s social media apps daily,” Crews stated.
